Balikpapan is a city located in southeast Borneo on an inlet of the Makassar Strait. Once an isolated Bugis fishing village, it has now developed into a major port city, recognized for its abundance of natural and mineral resources. The regional base to many multinational corporations operating in East Borneo, its not rare to find many foreigners in this small city. Balikpapan may be small, but it boasts one of the largest and busiest airports in Borneo.
The provincial capital of West Sulawesi, Mamuju is a coastal town with a beach line stretching for over 400 kilometers. Here you will find many beaches, many of which have rarely been visited. Two of the most popular seaside destinations in Mamuju are Lombang-Lombang beach and Manakarra beach. Manokarra beach offers beautiful panoramic views, popular with snap happy photographers while Lombang-Lombang\'s black sand beach is great to get in some snorkeling or to just splash around on the beach. A strong Melayu culture is kept alive by locals, and many ancient traditional buildings can be found just outside of the city.
