Officially known as Santo Domingo de Guzman, the city is the capital of the Dominican Republic. The city was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1946 on the east bank of the Ozama River. From 1936 to 1961, Santo Domingo was called “Ciudad Trujillo”, named by a Dominican Republic’s dictator. The city is also known as the “Gateway to the Caribbean”.
